Most people know that social media is one of the fastest growing and most popular features of the Internet these days. For teachers, using different forms of social media can open up many possibilities for different ways to involve students. From networking, to group collaboration and class projects, here are 4 tools that teachers can use to jump start the creativity.

A teacher and her students

Edu 2.0 – This is another great online course management system where teachers can share lesson plans, quizzes, projects, videos and much more in a shared library. Flexibility Is One of What e-Learning Can Offer for Teachers and Students

The use of online learning, or distance education, is increasing in K-12 schools. The transition from face-to-face (F2F) teaching to online teaching takes time for F2F teachers to transition from their set, learned ways of teaching F2F to teaching online.

Many teachers start small, perhaps simply putting some static information (e.g., course outline or syllabus) online. Gradually, as teachers become more accustomed, secure, confident, and competent working online over time, they put more of their teaching online. Many/most teachers start with a blended, or hybrid, approach to online learning in which they still do most/all their teaching, in the physical classroom, but start putting materials and information online. Gradually, baby step by baby step, teachers experiment/try teaching in the online environment, maybe by having an online discussion. And maybe those first online discussions are closely monitored by allowing students access only while the whole class is in a computer room.

Today, online is not replacing F2F teaching/learning in our K-12 schools. However, it is an increasingly viable, and used, adjunct to traditional classroom teaching. Educators – teachers and administrators – would be well served to investigate its potential use in their schools.

FaceTime is About to Become the Future

Last Friday, I googled out an impressive blog post regarding FaceTime - the video chat system on iPhone 4. That blogger’s mom doesn’t know smartphones and has used a Motorola RAZR for most of the last decade, but now she wants her son to drop $299 for a new iPhone 4 so she can see her grandson. The reason for this is quite simple, it seems like magic to her that she can see live video of her grandson without having to make her 62-year-old husband hobble over to the computer and fire up Skype.

Yeah, I totally understand this mom’s desire for an iPhone 4. Just as experts say that 80% of communication is actually transmitted through body language and expression. But most of this is lost over text or spoken conversation. Text only allows for word choice. Voice only allows for intonation. Fortunately, with FaceTime and its wonderful video quality, people can actually see even a slight change in expression, such as a twinkle in the eyes or a subtle smile. Moreover, with FaceTime technology, the mobile devices like iPhone 4 are a lot easier to move around the house (even into the bed) than a clunky old PC. You can also have your iPhone 4 comfortably docked or propped up beside you if you want to keep your hands free. As a result, there are a growing number of family members and friends taking advantage of FaceTime to help them stay connected and intimate when they’re in long distance relationships and unable to be together. Because of FaceTime, iPhone 4 indeed provides several advantages over regular telephones and PCs in communication.

Despite all of the above, it must be admitted that, video chat is not new, and right now, FaceTime is only available between iPhone 4s (soon the new iPod Touch) over Wi-Fi. However, since Apple says FaceTime is an open standard and other manufacturers could tap into the protocol if they want to. For this reason, I strongly believe that this technology will be the future. As long as more adoption of FaceTime occurs in the marketplace, there will be an explosion of FaceTime devices on the network, including Macs, PCs and other devices.

Imagine being able to call everyone from any device, never having to worry about which device you’re using to call from. With just a tap, you can wave a hello or share a smile to your parents, kids and friends without any hassle. That’s the technology of FaceTime. Wow, so, are your ready for the “face time”?

Here are 5 ways to improve your site's rank in Google

In April, Americans conducted a staggering 15.5 billion Web searches. Studies show that the first result receives about 40% of clicks. These days, simply creating a great website won't attract more customers to your business. Your site must also rank well in search results. Getting this to happen is called search engine optimization.
To rank well on Google and other search sites, you have to optimize your site. This requires careful work and planning, but it is an important way to attract new customers to your business.
There's a lot to SEO, and it requires patience; it can take months to see results. It is also an ongoing process, but I have some tips to help you improve your site's rank.

Choose keywords carefully

Your keyword phrase is the search term that leads visitors to your site. You should optimize each of your pages for one and only one keyword phrase. It should be relevant to your business and the page's content.
Check the popularity of keywords with a tool like Google Adwords' Keyword Estimator. You may never get a good search ranking for extremely popular keywords. If they aren't popular enough, they aren't worth your immediate effort.

Use meta tags

Meta tags provide information about a Web page. The most important meta tag is the title tag. This tells search sites and visitors what the page is about. It should include your keyword phrase near the beginning.
Some people erroneously believe that meta keywords and meta descriptions are terribly important. Search sites don't give them much — if any — weight. Still, provide keywords and a clear, accurate description. Think of the description as a marketing tool enticing visitors to your site.

Focus on content

Content is king. Without useful content, your site will never get a good ranking. So, your content should provide value to readers. Search sites prefer frequently updated content. That's why many CEOs have taken up blogging.
Of course, you also need to use your keyword phrase within your content. There is some debate over the importance of keyword density. That's how often the phrase appears on the page. It should appear several times. Use it near the opening of the first paragraph. Also make sure it appears in bold or in a heading on the page.

Pay attention to links

Search engines see incoming links as votes for your site. Your rank will go up. So, it is important to have other sites link to yours. Network with other webmasters. Notify related sites when you post new content. Use a service like Ping-O-Matic to notify blog aggregators of new postings.

With links, reputation is important. Links from link farms or other shady sites can harm your search rank. Search sites also frown on link exchange programs. Likewise, be careful about linking to other sites. Linking to a bad one can also harm your rank.

Hire an expert carefully

There is much, much more to search engine optimization. You may not have time to learn it all. You may prefer to hire a professional. This can be expensive; some companies pay thousands a month for the service. Your actual cost will depend on your goals and your company's site.

Unscrupulous SEO practices can get you banned from search sites. So, check a company's references thoroughly. The company and its clients should be ranked in Google. Make sure you understand the company's practices.

Run from anyone promising you a top spot in Google. Avoid companies that claim a special relationship with Google. Don't hand over control of your site. Finally, submitting your site to search engines generally won't help. Companies that focus on search site submissions aren't worth your time.

First Look: Gears Of War 3

Epic Games has released the first trailer for Gears of War 3, which was officially announced last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The clip shows Marcus Fenix and a newly bearded Dominic Santiago battling Locust in an ashy wasteland. There's a quick shot of a female COG, which Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski confirmed via Twitter was Delta Squad's dispatcher, Anya Stroud. There are also shots of a horrifying tentacled beast and a wicked shotgun.

The clip ends with a release window of April 2011, though an April 5 release date has since been revealed.

If you aren't already following Bleszinsk's Twitter feed, you may want to start doing so. He's been updating it regularly, including a recent entry that confirms four-player co-op throughout the game's campaign.

Sony PlayStation Move sub-controller to be called Navigation Controller

PlayStation Move sub-controller was officially named PlayStation Move navigation controller.

The wireless and untethered controller hosts directional buttons, two shoulder buttons as well as an analog stick. It allows for intuitive navigation of the XMB menu and in-game characters. It’s integrated rechargeable Li-ion battery allows users to charge the controller and automatically pair it with the PS3 through a USB cable.

It can be used in most PS Move games that call for in-game character navigation and replicates the DualShock 3 wireless controller. The official update is supplemented by similar information which turned up in the FCC’s database that Engadget spotted recently.
